what is yoga nidra?

Yoga Nidra is a guided practice that leads you into a profound state of relaxation while keeping you awake and aware. This deeply restorative state fosters healing, learning, and spiritual transformation by allowing you to access higher levels of consciousness.

Rooted in ancient traditions, Yoga Nidra draws from the Tantric practice of Nyāsa, as well as Upanishadic and Yogic understandings of consciousness. While these techniques have existed for centuries, Yoga Nidra was adapted for modern practitioners by Swami Satyananda Saraswati in the 1960s. Through this practice, you awaken subtle energies within, cultivating a deep inner awareness that extends beyond relaxation.

Turn the video's volume up to hear these crystal singing bowls, rain stick, and fairy chimes, which are just a few of the sounds you will hear in this journey.

How does it work?
Your Yoga Nidra guide uses systematic techniques to direct your awareness. All you have to do is lie down, relax, and listen. Nestle into a blanket, settle into stillness, and allow yourself to be gently guided into a state of deep rest.

What is it like?
Every session is unique—both from person to person and moment to moment. Some experience a flowing sensation, as if drifting in an ocean of awareness, with others feel a deep sense of peace, healing, and insight.

At the physical level, your brainwaves gradually slow down, shifting toward the Alpha state (associated with relaxation and creativity) and possibly even the Theta state, a meditative state linked to deep healing and expanded consciousness. As body awareness, fades into deep rest, your higher faculties remain awake and receptive.

It's a time to counteract the demands of daily life, slow down, stop doing, and simply be.

How can Yoga Nidra help me?
Through deep relaxation and rotation of consciousness, Yoga Nidra helps to optimize body and mind—but its true purpose is spiritual transformation.

Restoration - Research suggests that 30 minutes of Yoga Nidra is equivalent to 4 hours of deep sleep, giving your body the nourishment and restorative healing it needs.

Beyond Restoration - More than just relaxation, Yoga Nidra is steeped in meditative traditions designed to explore the nature of consciousness, potentially leading to spiritual awakening.

What do I need to do?
Once you lie down, there's nothing for you to do. You'll be guided through the process of deep relaxation, visualization, and expanded awareness. In this receptive state, harmonic sound healing instruments—including crystal singing bowls, a gong, and other vibrational sounds—help maintain the experience of Yogic sleep.

Your body, mind, and soul will rest in a state of deep presence and non-judgmental awareness—a place beyond words.

To close our time together, Sandy will prepare a nourishing herbal tea blend paired with a sweet but healthy treat to gently bring you back to waking consciousness, completing the experience with warmth and care.

Sandy Beach

once you register

You'll get an automatic email once you register with the following information:

What to Bring

Bring items for lying down on a firm floor for an extended period.

Something to put UNDER you, something to put OVER you.

Suggestions

  • Under you - One or even two yoga mats, a yoga mat and a blanket to put on top of it or a sleeping bag, maybe a pillow

  • Over you - a light blanket(s) or sleeping bag

  • Other accessories - hydration, pillow, eye pillow/mask (for relaxation or blocking out low light) etc. It is suggested to help you stay awake not to use eye pillows/masks, but if it helps to block the light, bring an eye pillow/mask

What to Avoid

Wearing any perfume or cologne. They are particularly distracting to Sandy who's overly sensitive to them and will be for the rest of the group as we'll be consciously working with the senses.

E-mail Instructions

You'll get an automatic email with instructions right after you register and another email from Sandy with reminders and instructions as we get closer to your event (1-2 days prior).

Yoga Nidra & Full Sound Immersion
A Journey Into Deep Relaxation
with Sandy Naimou

Yoga Nidra is a state of wakeful relaxation—often called yogic sleep—where you access higher states of consciousness as the silent witness, the quiet observer. In this deeply restorative practice, we use supportive techniques such as gentle movement, guided meditation, and sound immersion to guide you inward. Even if you drift into sleep, your body and mind still receive all the benefits. Yes, it’s that powerful!

Imagine being in a deep sleep state while remaining aware, similar to lucid dreaming or the space between wakefulness and sleep. Yoga Nidra helps you consciously engage the relaxation response, allowing your brain waves to enter the theta state—often described as a magical state of consciousness that is both deeply healing and transformative.

At the end of a traditional yoga class, Savasana offers a few minutes of rest—but Yoga Nidra takes that experience to another level. Through deep breathing, meditation, visualization, and sound, we trigger the relaxation response in a profound way.

The Format of the evening

Preparation

You’ll be lying down for about an hour, so comfort is key. Bring a yoga mat, blanket, pillow, and anything else that helps you relax. Eye masks, bolsters, and water bottles are also helpful. Some yoga blankets will be available.

Releasing tension

We begin with gentle movement to release physical tension, followed by group chanting to quiet the mind and attune to the power of sound. Self-generated sound healing is a powerful way to connect, release, and to become aware of subtler vibrations, preparing you for the experience.

Yoga Nidra & Sound Immersion

Once settled, you’ll be guided into a state of profound relaxation and awareness through the techniques of Yoga Nidra. As the practice unfolds, a sound immersion with crystal singing bowls, gongs, and harmonic tones will deepen your experience, recalibrating body and mind while opening the heart to intuition.

Herbal Infusion Sharing

To conclude, we’ll share an Ayurvedic-inspired herbal infusion and a nourishing treat, allowing time for reflection and integration.

The Purpose of this Experience

This practice is designed to help clear layers of physical, emotional, and mental tension that cloud inner clarity. When we release these layers, we naturally access our intuitive higher mind, fostering a sense of deep inner peace and connection.

You’ll leave feeling lighter, clearer, and more fully yourself.

We hope you'll join us!

Namaste.

Sandy Naimou

Sandy has been teaching Yoga since 2011 and practicing since 1997 at the age of 17.  While her practice has changed over the years, some things have remained constant, such as her dedication to and faith in the practice, and her love for sound as a way to experiencing an inner silence and connectedness.

A little more about Sandy...

Sandy has always loved to infuse sound into the yoga classes to facilitate presence and deeper relaxation. She has offered numerous sound meditations since 2018 in classes, workshops and retreats, combining the power of sound with techniques of Yoga Nidra, even when teaching for HAP's corporate clients or for many years, GM.

Her reverence for sound has also inspired Sandy to lean on her voice for vocal toning (holding out the voice in open sounds) as well as Sanskrit mantra chanting since she began Yoga (and she's a stickler for pronunciation). These last few years in particular, she has focused on making peace with her voice, something she had long felt self-conscious about. She uses her voice to prepare for meditation, to experience a profound sense of devotion, or to simply calm her mind. Having experienced the positive effects that self-generated vocalization can have, she is always excited to bring that experience to others.

Sandy is also a professional audiobook narrator, which offers her a way to express her deep respect for power of speech in sound and tone and the art of acting. (Visit her narration website: www.sandynaimou.com or see a list of her current audiobooks on Audible)

After a hiatus on in-person indoor sessions, she's super excited to bring back in-person Yoga Nidra and sound immersions.
